Range Rovers are the most-inspected luxury SUV in our shop — for good reason.
Range Rovers are the single most popular luxury SUV in the UAE — and the single most-inspected vehicle in our workshop. They're stunning, capable, and offer enormous value second-hand because depreciation is brutal in the first 3 years. But that same depreciation exists for a reason: maintenance and reliability can be challenging if you buy the wrong one. This guide gives you the honest picture so you can buy with confidence.
The single most common issue on all Range Rovers, Sports, and Velars. Air struts and compressors fail with age and heat. Symptoms: car sits low overnight, error message on dash, harsh ride. Replacement cost in UAE: AED 2,500 – 6,000 per corner, plus AED 2,000 – 4,000 for the compressor. Always check that the car sits level after sitting overnight.
Particularly on older L405 and L494 platforms. Modules talk to each other constantly — when one starts failing, multiple warning lights appear. A full OBD scan across all modules is non-negotiable on these vehicles.
Earlier 3.0L supercharged V6s and 5.0L V8s had timing chain tensioner issues, especially when oil changes were stretched. Listen for a rattle on cold start. A timing chain job on these engines is AED 8,000 – 15,000.
TDV6 and SDV6 diesels are smooth and powerful but need clean fuel and regular driving. Cars driven mostly in city traffic suffer EGR clogging and injector issues. Listen for rough idle and check for diesel smoke under load.
Earlier InControl Touch Pro systems frequently freeze, lose signal, or reboot. The newer Pivi Pro is far better. Test every feature including reverse camera, navigation, Bluetooth, CarPlay, and the rear-seat entertainment if equipped.
| Model & year | Strengths | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| L405 Vogue 2018-2022 | Refined, capable, well-priced now | Air suspension, supercharger oil leaks (petrol), infotainment age |
| L494 Sport 2018-2022 | Sportier dynamics, lower running costs than full size | Same air suspension issues, prop shaft wear on 4x4 system |
| L460 Vogue 2023+ | Newer platform, more reliable so far, cleaner styling | Premium price still, lower used inventory |
| Velar 2018-2022 | Smaller, easier to live with, lovely interior | Tyre wear from wide rims, infotainment freezing |
| Evoque 2nd gen 2020+ | Most reliable in the family, mild hybrid efficient | Less prestige, modest residuals |
On a Range Rover, the difference between a car that's been serviced every 10,000 km at a JLR specialist vs one that's had "oil changes" at a corner garage is the difference between a great purchase and a money pit. We strongly recommend asking for:
Range Rovers fall under our Stress Free 625+ point package (AED 599) due to the diagnostic complexity. Beyond the standard inspection we run:
Negotiation reality: On used Range Rovers, our average customer negotiates AED 6,000 – 12,000 off the asking price using the inspection findings. Even a clean car typically needs a battery or service — that's worth AED 2,000-3,000 off.
Buying a Range Rover? — Book the Stress Free inspection (AED 599) — it pays for itself many times over on these vehicles.
