Three platforms, very different risks. Here is the honest comparison from people who inspect the cars that come off all three every week.
When buying a used car in the UAE you essentially have three choices: buy privately through Dubizzle or Facebook, buy through an inspected marketplace like CarSwitch, or buy from a used-car showroom. Each has its own risk profile, pricing and hidden costs. Here is the honest breakdown from inspectors who see the cars that move through all three channels.
Dubizzle is the largest used-car platform in the UAE and has the widest selection. Most cars are sold directly by their owners, which means prices are often lower — but there is zero buyer protection and no independent verification of the car's condition or history.
The biggest risk on Dubizzle: Loan-encumbered cars. A surprising number of Dubizzle sellers list cars that still have bank loans against them. If you pay before the loan is formally released and the seller later defaults on the bank, you could lose the car. Always get a signed bank clearance letter before any payment.
CarSwitch and similar services position themselves as a safer, inspected alternative to Dubizzle. They take in cars from sellers, run their own inspection, and list the vehicle with a reported condition and a short warranty.
A platform inspection is not an independent inspection: CarSwitch's inspection is done by their own team to facilitate a sale. We regularly find faults on CarSwitch-listed cars that were not in the platform report — undisclosed accident damage, electrical issues and AC systems needing work. An independent check is still necessary.
Dubai and the northern emirates have hundreds of used-car showrooms, from large multi-brand lots to small specialist dealers. They buy at auction or from the public, refurbish cosmetically, and sell at a retail margin. Showrooms offer the widest financing options but the least transparency about a car's history.
| Channel | Price | Safety | Selection | Independent inspection needed? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dubizzle / Facebook (private) | Lowest | Low | Highest | Yes — always |
| CarSwitch / inspected platforms | Mid | Medium | Medium | Yes — platform check is not independent |
| Used-car showroom | Mid to high | Medium | Wide | Yes — showrooms rarely disclose full history |
| Authorised dealer (CPO) | Highest | Highest | Brand-limited | Still recommended for full peace of mind |
Our recommendation: buy from whichever channel has the right car at the right price — but always commission an independent inspection before you hand over a dirham. The inspection is the constant that protects you regardless of where the car came from.
