How to Transfer Car Ownership in Dubai — RTA Guide (2026)

The RTA transfer takes 20 minutes. What happens before it — inspection, loan clearance, insurance — is where buyers get caught out.

Transferring car ownership in Dubai is a straightforward RTA process — but most buyers are so focused on completing it that they skip the steps that actually protect them. Getting the transfer wrong, or doing it before inspecting and confirming the car's condition, can leave you with an expensive problem that is now legally yours.

Step-by-step: transferring ownership in Dubai

  1. Agree the price and confirm the seller will clear any bank loans against the car, evidenced by a bank release letter
  2. Book a pre-purchase inspection — once the car is in your name, any faults are your liability
  3. Meet at an RTA vehicle licensing centre or an authorised typing centre (both can process the transfer)
  4. Present the required documents (listed below)
  5. Pay the transfer fee and receive the new registration card (mulkiya) in your name
  6. Arrange insurance before you drive away — this is a legal requirement, not optional

Never pay the full amount before the transfer is complete: A common UAE scam is taking full payment, then claiming a 'bank delay' on the loan clearance letter. Pay an agreed small deposit if necessary and pay the balance only when you are physically at the RTA completing the transfer.

Where to do the transfer in Dubai

You can transfer at any RTA Vehicle Licensing Centre — Al Barsha, Deira, Al Tawar, Al Qusais — or at an authorised typing centre. Typing centres are often faster for straightforward transfers. The RTA app allows some renewals online but private-to-private transfers still require a physical visit as of 2026.

Why you must inspect the car before transferring

Once the car is in your name, everything wrong with it becomes your problem — mechanically, legally and financially. Any accident damage, undisclosed loan or hidden faults are your responsibility the moment the mulkiya changes hands. An independent inspection the day of or the day before the transfer is the last checkpoint that protects you.

Inspect the day of the transfer: Some sellers make last-minute swaps — a working battery replaced with a weak one, a good spare tyre swapped for a bald one. Do the inspection as close to the transfer time as possible and make sure the car you inspect is physically the same car you drive away.

What if the car has traffic fines or a loan?

Outstanding traffic fines registered to the vehicle must be paid before the transfer can proceed. The seller is responsible for clearing these — you can check for fines on the RTA app before agreeing a price. Any bank loan shown as 'under mortgage' on the registration must be released first with a no-objection letter from the lender.

Inspect before you transfer — Book a same-day inspection anywhere in Dubai. Our inspector comes to the car and you get the digital report before you commit to the RTA transfer.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can I transfer car ownership without the seller being present in Dubai?
In most cases the seller must be present with their original Emirates ID. If the seller is outside the UAE, a Power of Attorney authenticated by a UAE notary is required.
How long does the transfer take at the RTA?
If all documents are in order, the counter process takes 15–30 minutes. Queues at busy centres can add an hour or more — go early or use an authorised typing centre to save time.
Can the car's existing insurance be transferred to my name?
No. You must arrange a new insurance policy in your own name before the transfer. The seller's policy ends when ownership changes.
What happens if I buy a car that still has an outstanding bank loan?
If the loan is not cleared and the mulkiya is still under mortgage, the RTA will block the transfer. Always demand and verify a signed loan clearance letter from the bank before handing over any money.
